Five-o’clock Shadow

Five-o’clock Shadow (noun)– the growth of beard present late in the afternoon on the face of a man who has not shaved since morning

Happy new academic year! A colleague and I were talking about a student today. As she was describing this junior in high school, she said, “Oh is he the kid who looks like he could be 25 and has a five-o’clcok shadow?”If I had to guess what she meant, I’d say a five-o’clock shadow means a hungover look of an alcoholic who has been drinking since the afternoon. Or perhaps it depicts a desperate look of a person who needs a drink since it’s five o’clock somewhere. I’m glad the student is neither hungover nor desperate for alcohol.
