Interrobang (noun)– a nonstandard punctuation mark intended to combine the functions of the question mark and the exclamation point, designed for use especially at the end of an exclamatory rhetorical question
New show! For the past month, I’ve been ripping through Shameless. The show depicts a dysfunctional family of six children who have unreliable parents and do their best to take care of each other on the South Side of Chicago. After finishing season three finale, I read a review of the episode on the A.V. Club. For one of the characters, his fate was “a giant interrobang” in the sense that we were surprised by what happened and were left with unanswered questions.
“Interrobang” is a portmanteau that combines a question mark (also known as an “interrogation” point) and a exclamation mark (also known as a “bang” to programmers). Really?! This word has nothing to do with something dirty?!
