Bidet (noun)– a low, oval basin with a faucet used for washing one’s bottom

For spring break I went to Jordan with Sarah, a great friend from college. Although she and her parents spoke Arabic and could help me get around, I wanted to be able to say a few words myself so that I could find my way home if lost and won’t die of thirst. “Bidi” means “I want.” When I incorrectly placed the accent on the second syllable, Sarah’s mum suggested that I think about the pronunciation of “bidet”, which they have one in their bathroom. The association didn’t help me with memorizing¬† how to say “I want” in Arabic, but I did learn a new word for a plumbing fixture.
