Woke (adjective)- actively aware of systemic injustices and prejudices, especially those related to civil and human rights
I’m slightly embarrassed that I didn’t learn about the contemporary meaning of woke until this year. Once I became aware of it, it’s everywhere. It’s on t-shirts. It’s the answer to one of the clues on Jeopardy. Two weeks ago Saturday Night Live featured a segment on woke jeans in its season premiere. These are gender-less, non-conforming, style-neutral, identity-free denim made for a generation that defies labels. According to Merriam-Webster, “stay woke and woke became part of a wider discussion in 2014, immediately following the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. The word woke became entwined with the Black Lives Matter movement.” My favorite features of the woke jeans are: its color ‘greb’ (a handful of colors, none of which are dominant) and uni-fly (this one is harder to explain in words, so watch the video clip).
